Investire in Cyprus Airways sarebbe investire su poco o niente a mio modesto parere.

I maggiori mercati restano comunque UK, Grecia, Russia e Germania.

BREAKING NEWS: Cyprus Airways operations may be suspended

Minister of Communications and Works Tasos Mitsopoulos said on Monday that it was possible that Cyprus Airways would suspend its operations since the company was recording such great losses and the state could not support it financially or cover it legally.

In statements in Paphos, Mitsopoulos noted that the Republic of Cyprus was legally exposed to the EU, adding that Cyprus is being questioned about the assistance it has given to the company and the EU has called on the Republic of Cyprus to terminate any form of cash flow to the company.

Thus, he said, other ways to support the company must be found the soonest possible, if the company was to continue to operate, and expressed hope that its Board of Directors would reach an agreement with prospective strategic investors, such as the Middle East Airlines and a conglomerate of Chinese investors.

Struggling Cyprus Airways cuts Greek routes, sells off two jets

24JUN2013
Cyprus Airways (CY, Larnaca) is teetering on the brink of collapse following reports that two more aircraft, an A319-100 and an A320-200, have been put up for sale as Nicosia desperately tries to find a solution to the airline's crisis. As part of a raft of painful cost-cutting measures, the decision has been made to leave the Greek domestic market entirely with effect from July 1 while at the same time, 490 out of 1'040 staff will be laid off to help reduce wage overheads. It is also reported that the government has already set up another company which will take over the airline's operations at some point, though this has yet to be corroborated. With repeated attempts at finding buyers willing to invest in the struggling airline failing, Nicosia was forced to inject USD130million (EUR100million) of its own money at the beginning of the year. The move has now resulted in an inquest by the European Commission to see whether or not the funds contravened EU regulations regarding state aid. (ch-aviation)

Cyprus Airways closed down after EU state aid ruling

* Cypriot flag carrier suspends operations
* EU said state aid it received was illegal
* Last flight occurred on Friday evening (Adds Commission said restructuring based on "unrealistic assumptions")

By Michele Kambas and Julia Fioretti
NICOSIA/BRUSSELS, Jan 9 (Reuters) - Cyprus has suspended operations at its flag carrier after the European Commission ordered the struggling airline to pay back over 65 million euros in illegal state aid. EU Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said Cyprus Airways had no chance of becoming viable without continued state subsidies, meaning money paid out in 2012 and 2013 as part of a restructuring package would have to be recovered. The restructuring plan was "based on unrealistic assumptions" the EU Commission said. Under EU rules a company can only receive state assistance once every 10 years, and the airline had already been bailed out in 2007. "The company has ceased being a viable entity ... and cannot continue to operate," Finance Minister Harris Georgiades told reporters. He said the state would fully cover the cost of alternative flights for passengers who had already booked with the airline. Cyprus Airways, 93 percent owned by the state and which employs 550 people, has a 10 percent share of flights to the island, down from 30 percent two years ago.

Ryanair, which announced dozens of new routes within hours of the collapse of Hungary's Malev in 2012, said in a statement that it was temporarily cutting prices to the Mediterranean island to help stranded passengers. However, Ryanair has relatively little spare capacity due to expansion planned for the summer. Quickly covering the flights would also be complicated by the fact that about a third of Cyprus Airways' destinations are outside of the European Union and its routes are longer than Ryanair's average.

The demise of the carrier is another blow to Cyprus, which was subjected to harsh bailout conditions in 2013 when it was yanked from the brink of bankruptcy by the IMF and the EU. A small number of demonstrators gathered outside Cyprus Airways' Nicosia offices on Friday evening, but the reaction from staff was muted. "It's pretty clear from the decision that the government didn't put a viable restructuring plan in place. Our union clearly says that was deliberate; you can turn any company around," said Petros Souppouris, head of the carrier's pilots union. Georgiades said authorities were looking into the possibility of re-creating an airline maintaining the Cyprus Airways trade name and logo. Once a suitor to acquire then troubled Greek carrier Olympic, Cyprus Airways has seen cheaper carriers muscle in on its more lucrative routes, particularly to Greece and the United Kingdom. It has been making losses for years, and attempts to sell it fell through last year. Both Ryanair and Greece's Aegean Airlines, which have taken market share away from Cyprus Airways, have submitted applications to Cypriot authorities to create subsidiaries on the island.

Nicosia

9 January 2015

Dear Passengers,

Following the adverse decision of the European Commission for Competition, issued today, on the application of the Republic of Cyprus of a Restructuring Plan for Cyprus Airways (Public) Ltd submitted in October 2013, the Board of Directors of Cyprus Airways has decided to initiate the procedure for voluntary liquidation and to that effect all necessary measures will be taken.

In the context of the above decision all operations of the company will be suspended as of the close of business today.

Cyprus Airways would like to warmly thank the millions of passengers who flew with the airline over the years, for their choice and support. Special thanks are also expressed to the staff of the airline as well as its associates, whose professionalism and dedication were always at the service of the passengers.

We are extremely honoured to have made a valuable contribution, over the last 68 years, to the development of the economy of Cyprus and its tourism industry in particular. We have flown the flag of our country worldwide with pride.

Thank you.
