BA CityFlyer to open new routes with additional E-Jets

    07 Dec 2017 14:13 GMT+01:00

British Airways is to increase regional division CityFlyer's Embraer fleet early next year and use the additional capacity to open new routes.

It will open summer services from Manchester to Edinburgh and Florence, as well as a link to Dublin, where its Irish sister carrier Aer Lingus is based.

CityFlyer has 20 Embraers ľ a mix of 14 190s and six 170s ľ but will take delivery of another pair of 190s over the first four months of 2018.

British Airways says the first jet will arrive in January and the second in April, giving it a total Embraer fleet of 22 aircraft.

It will also use the aircraft to raise frequencies on services from London City to Milan Linate and Frankfurt.

BA taking 'baby steps' in growing UK regional markets: chief

    07 Dec 2017 15:40 GMT+01:00

British Airways' offering of more routes from the UK regions this year represented "baby steps" by the carrier toward better understanding the growing local market, in the view of its chief executive Alex Cruz.

Speaking at the UK Aviation Club in London on 6 December, Cruz described the regional UK traffic to domestic and European markets as being at its highest-ever level. The carrier's decision to offer more summer routes from regional gateways is an attempt "to explore those markets through summer flying", he says.

"Please let us not make a mistake, the seats are there and then some," he stresses. "Does BA have a role in that? I think time will tell."

But Cruz says he is mindful that the UK regional market is "extremely competitive" and that to operate the majority of the seats in the regions "one would need to be extremely astute and ready to compete with very, very low-cost bases".

In May, BA returned to Birmingham and Bristol for the first time in 10 years when its CityFlyer division began seasonal flights to Ibiza, Malaga and Palma de Mallorca in Spain and Florence in Italy.

From May 2018 the carrier will increase weekend flights from Manchester to Dublin, Florence, Ibiza, Malaga and Palma, and from Birmingham to Palma, and add an extra weekend flight from Bristol to Malaga. Additional summer routes include Manchester to Alicante and Nice, Birmingham to Malaga and Florence, and Bristol to Florence, Ibiza and Palma.

CityFlyer will take delivery of two additional Embraer 190s next year.

Cruz says BA will fly 39 new routes in 2018, versus 2016, as the airline operates its largest-ever network operated.

On the subject of international routes, Cruz says he is "looking forward" to working with BA's network team to "choose the destinations we will fly to" from London Gatwick using the slots that IAG purchased from the administrators of Monarch.

BA has a "bunch" of new routes it would like to operate to from London Heathrow once the gateway's third runway becomes operational, he adds.

Cruz argues that BA is in a "fantastic position to contribute significantly to the UK economy" whether it is given 10%, 20%, 30% "or whatever" of the new capacity the runway will deliver.

Molto bene. Nonostante la politica locale che da sempre rema contro, FLR continua a crescere.
